Instructor Training

Also available is instructor training, where all possible needs of the trainee instructor are met, at the lowest possible cost on a pay as you train basis.

We are an O.R.D.I.T approved Driving School, and our training programme is designed to prepare you fully for each of the three examinations that you need to pass, in order for you to become an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.). An explanation of how the qualifying procedure works is as follows.

Test of Theory (Part One)

This exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions in which you have 90 minutes to complete. You will need a score of at least 85% to pass the exam, and it is divided into the following 4 bands –

1)Road procedure.

2)Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge.

3)Driving test, disabilities, law.

4)Publications, instructional techniques.

However, although the minimum score is 85%, each band requires a minimum score of 20. Once this part of the exam is completed you will then have to sit the Hazard Awareness Perception Test. This exam consists of 14 video clips, with a score depending on how quick you react to a developing hazard. A score of 57 out of a possible 75 is required for you to pass this part of the exam, and you must also pass both parts of the exam or you will have to re-sit the exam. You are able to re-sit this exam as many times as you like.

The Driving Technique Test (Part Two)

This exam consists of an eyesight test, in which you must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 27.5m (90’). This is followed by a driving test, which lasts approximately one hour, in which you are expected to drive at a very high standard, on all types of roads and junctions, including motorways and rural roads. This test also includes four reversing manoeuvres, and the Emergency Stop. To pass this test you must commit no more than 6 minor faults, more than 6 will result in a fail. Also a ‘Serious’ or ‘Dangerous’ fault will result in a fail. You are allowed 3 attempts at this test.

The Instructional Ability Test (Part Three)

The part three exam lasts for approximately 1 hour, and is divided into 2 phase’s. The first phase will involve a Supervising Examiner role-playing a totally untrained, or partly trained learner driver. The second phase will involve the S.E. role-playing a trained pupil who is close to or is test standard, or somebody who holds a full driving licence but requires further training, as they haven’t driven for some years. You must not make the mistake of assuming that the ‘pupil’ in each phase is the same person. Like the part two exam, you are allowed 3 attempts to pass.

The cost of the training is as follows-

Part one - £230

This part is a mainly a home study course, but you are required to attend two classroom sessions, and an initial interview and induction. You will be offered phone support as and when you need it. The fee includes the Part One exam fee, all relevant books and software, and the essential D.S.A. starter pack.

Part Two - £500

This part consists of 10 driving lessons lasting for 2 hours each, and you will be trained to drive on all types of roads on a one to one basis. 20 hours should be sufficient to prepare you for this exam, but if we feel that your standard of driving is not quite up to test standard then you will be required to take extra lessons to help you improve. The additional lessons will be charged at £25.00 per 1-hour lesson. Please note that training for part two can commence before sitting your part one exam.

Part Three - £1200

Part three consists of a minimum of 40 hours training, all of which are carried out in car, on a one to one basis. You will learn how to train a complete novice driver, a partly trained pupil, a pupil who is trained and nearing test standard, or somebody who has passed their test but requires further training. Your training in part one and part two will help you with your part three training.

The times and dates of all your training will be arranged in advance, and where possible will fit around your normal activities. I am sure that you have many questions to ask, so please contact me if you have any queries whatsoever. Before training can begin you will be required to attend a quite informal interview,
